Fitzroy Reader

Systematic Phonics-Based Decodable readers for Lifelong Literacy

The Fitzroy Readers use a phonic approach to literacy and consist of ninety carefully graded story books. Each reader builds on the one before by introducing a new sound or digraph, and a few special words to learn by memory. The Word Skills workbooks contain spelling, grammar, punctuation, comprehension and creative writing sheets for use alongside each individual reader.

SAAR Fitzroy Master List

The Master List provides a complete reference to all the sounds and special words introduced in the Fitzroy Readers and Fitzroy Word Skills program. Each new Reader systematically adds a sound (such as /ay/, /ch/, or /oo/) to strengthen phonics knowledge.

Alongside, students encounter “special words” that cannot be sounded out in the usual way and need to be recognised by sight. Over time, many of these words transition from being “special” to fully decodable, supporting children as they progress from beginner to advanced reading levels.

This Master List serves as a valuable tool for teachers and parents, offering a clear overview of the reading sequence and ensuring continuity of learning across all levels.

Fitzroy Readers Running Records (FRRRs)

The Fitzroy Readers Running Records (FRRRs) provide educators with a reliable framework to monitor and evaluate student reading progress. Each assessment captures three essential dimensions of reading—Fluency, Accuracy, and Punctuation—measured on a straightforward 1–5 scale.

Every FRRRs pack (beginning from Levels 1-10 and continuing across all levels) offers downloadable PDFs that include:

Student Read-Aloud Sheets

These are fully selected sentences drawn from the corresponding Reader, enabling focused assessment of applied reading skills.

The Fitzroy Readers closely align with the NCF’s Balanced Literacy Approach, which emphasizes both lower-order and higher-order literacy skills. Through systematic phonics instruction, they build print awareness, phonological awareness, decoding, and spelling accuracy. Alongside, the Readers and Word Skills workbooks promote comprehension, vocabulary development, and creative expression through guided reading, independent reading, and writing tasks. This ensures a balanced focus on learning to read and reading to learn, exactly as envisioned in the NCF.
